Birders unite!
As a non-birder (and also a non-clued-in-to-migration-patterns-human), I just learned that Point Reyes is the last Quik Stop for millions of birds on the Pacific Flyway.
Apparently, we are in the middle of a massive "changing of the guard." While the famous Elephant Seal moms are heading out to sea, billions of birds are streaming north over California.
In Point Reyes, this creates a "migrant trap" where birds who’ve been flapping til their wings start to smoke, spot our beloved peninsula down below and drop out of the sky in a massive, hangry heap to refuel.
Ooh ooh! And did you know this?? Point Reyes has been named the National Audubon Society’s #1 birding hotspot for multiple years? (Buteo Books, I know you know this, and you’re like… really? How do people NOT KNOW this??) ANYWAY, you’ll be pleased to throw down this fun fact at the next art benefit (see #5 below) – 54% of all North American bird species have been recorded in our very own, Point Reyes.
If you don’t want to miss Warblergeddon, there are spots left in the massive 3-day extravaganza that is the Birding & Nature Festival happening this weekend.
