I don’t know about you, but when I think of “hobby” I immediately think CRAFTS. I assume yarn and glue and crochet are probably involved. Upon further investigation though, I found out a hobby can be ANYTHING – “an activity that you do for pleasure when you are not working,” so says the Cambridge Dictionary.
Also, who knew hobbies could be so… therapeutic?? According to the people who put National Hobby Month on the calendar, hobbies like (YES-CRAFTING), reading, cooking, baking, birding, playing music, etc., reduce stress, boost creativity, and give us a sense of purpose.
Some great happenings all around town — outdoors or inside, day or night.

5 FUN THINGS TO DO IN MARIN
Does dress-up dance party count as a hobby? Sure does – especially when there’s a contest involved. DJs, deli bites & disco at Sweetwater on Sat 1/24. Tip: hit the real-deal vintage shops (worth the trip to Haight St.) for a shot at winning best-dressed disco dancer. (*date night idea of the week)
There’s always so much happening at Mystic to flex your hobby muscles (without the next-day soreness) – this weekend you can try your hand at dipping candles or knitting a hat.
Want to boost your cultural literacy and learn from Marin's very own Master of Trivia, Howard Rachelson, author of the Pacific Sun’s Trivia Cafe column? Then Triviology 101 is for you. There’s also birding, language classes, creative writing, pickleball, history, bread-baking — basically everything. Classes start Jan 26. PS, happy 100th, College of Marin!
I mean, not today. But, you know — start training. SF Running Company hosts weekly runs in the Marin Headlands which is great prep for the 41st Annual Golden Gate Headlands Marathon on April 4. Half marathon and 10k options. 🏃♀️
Speaking of the Marin Headlands, you can volunteer at the nursery this weekend and help keep the park looking its beautiful best. Activities include transplanting seedlings, pruning plants, processing seeds for the next growing season, and more.
